Not too far from the Aya Sofya and the Blue Mosque is the Topkapi Palace, it is where the Sultans used to live. It was built in 1453. We didn't have time to see all of it, but what we saw was great. The treasure room was the coolest, they had a 86 carat diamond there.
This is the main gate into the palace
This is a view of the palace from the other side of the river. The palace has a great view.
In the 1800's a Sultan got sick of his old palace so he built a new European palace. This one was just as impressive as the old one. I guess part of the reason was also to show how powerful the empire was, it had some financial trouble at the time and as you can imagine building this type of palace did not help the problem. This is the Dombance Palace.
